I play a modified Deering Sierra Banjo. I had a Wood tone ring made for it. It was made by Todd Korup in Grafton, WI. Despite the modification I do proudly endorse Deering Banjos I wouldn't modify just anything.
Back to the banjo...We chose to use old growth hard maple for the rim and grandillo wood to the tone ring. The same woods Deering uses for the John Hartford banjo I believe.
